Q&A :: Life before IIT

Well I am asked the same questions again and again , so I just thought of taking some time out to document the questions ::

Q . What is KVPY ? How do I get in ?
A .
KVPY is a fellowship , more importantly its a stipend and a achievement kindoff thing . It is for people to get interested in research . If you do get through you will get to attend annual conference [ At IISC for south people ] .

It consists of 2 rounds [As of 2010] :
1. Written round : Consists of questions in PCMB . Each part consists of 2 sections with varied weight-age . Physics ,Chemistry ,Math - be sure to read through all that happens in 1st year . Q's are pretty basic but little higher than 10th level because its objective .Biology read a little and go [from ICSE text ].

2. Interview : You would be called for an interview [ mine was at IIT M] . You would be facing 4 people  one each for PCMB.  Be prepared cause it wont be easy . My strategy was to go through physics and avoid having time for biology [ which i sucked at ] . I had read through the entire Halliday Resnick book . First I was asked about my interests : I said Quantum Mechanics / Relativity -> they asked some relatively easy questions in this . This was followed by a q in fluids . Next in math I was asked two questions [little higher level] which I solved :) . After this there was just 5 min left , the chem guy asked me a logic q which also I answered and happy ending . Dont be over confident and do anything to make the starting go well - else you will get raped.

Q . What books to refer for preparation ?
A.
The Arihant series is good for maths and physics . Read through the theory in DC Pandey . There is a book by Irodov , book only to be tried by people who think they are good enough . The new pattern  book by Goyal [Arihant] is good for maths .

Chemistry is tricky with lot of stuff to memorize , remember to get the concepts . Inorganic I remember the book of FIITJEE is good. Organic should be general and available in any text . RC Mukherjee 's book for physical Chemistry .

Life at IIT - Sem 2 starts

Life is back to routine now that semester 2 has started.

The courses this semester are
Eng. Drawing(ME),
Linear Algebra(MA),
Relativity and Quantum Mechanics(PH),
Statistics and
Department Introductory Course(DIC) : Programming Paradigms & Abstractions.

Quite love the DIC stuff , Prof Sanyal is awesome .Our maths Prof this sem is hmm bit too boring , so much so that more people sleep than listen to him. That i feel its necessary to make a special mention that people sleep even when prof is in front of them and he doesnt bother al\s well :-) .Rest of it is pretty good .ED seems to interesting.

Feels nice to be back in insti after a month and the sem started out well .Techfest was awesome , so was Moodi -- really really grand .

Techfest 2011 [ Jan 7 -9 ]

Yet again after MoodI [See Mood Indigo] Techfest too turned out to be an awesome event. I worked as an organizer under lecture series department .

There were whole range of competitions including awesomemaxx Robowars -Hell in a Cell where robots battle it out .

Exhibitions was another thing you ought to see .It had universities and exhibitors form around the world showcasing some of the most amazing technology.

@ Exhibitions:OpenVibe - Brain Control using Light
The site of exhibitions - Huge One
Eminent people from around the globe were called in to give lectures.I as an organizer could well see that this  was a grand success, not a single seat was left in any of the lectures. We had to literally shoo away the people left out after the auditoriums got filled.
Myself with Michael Jones,Founder Google Earth

Gaming zone ,the name explains it all . We had Alienware's and got to see some of the finest play it out in the finals.

The night segment of Techfest - Technoholix was the best part .Each day we would have 2 groups perform for a crowd 5k++ .People would have to stand in queue for 2 hrs atleast to get an entry into the venue but no one would leave disappointed, it was well worth it  .VJ Hose from MTV came over on the last day to take a small video of the huge crowd that had gathered.

There were also a variety of workshops .The main insti roads had stalls were some small competitions were run with freebies to give away.

Some nice things that one got to see at techfest :

- Lazer Tag: 3 teams of 6 persons each competing to be the top team , all you got to do is shoot the opponent using laser [ gun shoots laser beam]
- Virtusphere: Full body immersion virtual reality.1st time in India.Check out the video below:
- Zorbing
- Lecture by Sir Harold Kroto ,Nobel Prize for discovering Buckminister Fullerence.
- Dunking Devils - Pro basky players performed a number of stunts and left the crowd asking for more

- Digital Wall Graffitti
Digital Wall Grafitti- shot in dark so little bad video quality

The fest ended with a grand fireworks display. In the traditional IIT style after the fest ended in GPL with all the managers caught and kicked :-) followed by a treat .
